Medical Microbiology: Advancing Science and Healthcare

Medical Microbiology is a vital branch of medical science focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating infectious diseases. It employs state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, including the BacT Alert automated blood culture system, ELISA, Real-Time PCR, and conventional microbiological techniques. The Clinical Microbiology faculty specialize in various fields such as bacteriology, virology, serology, immunology, parasitology, mycobacteriology, mycology, and anaerobic bacteriology.

The Microbiology Department boasts NABL accreditation and ICMR recognition for its BSL-2 RT PCR testing laboratory. It also houses an HIV laboratory (FICTC) and serves as the DOTS Microscopy Centre under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme.

A key initiative of the department is its commitment to hospital infection control. Microbiologists at NIMS are integral to the hospital infection control committee, ensuring the application of effective disinfection and sterilization methods. They also oversee biomedical waste management, working to prevent and control hospital- and community-acquired infections.

Education and training form the core of the department’s activities. Through case-based learning and interdisciplinary teaching, students gain valuable knowledge, with clinical integration enhancing the learning experience. The department aims to deliver top-tier education to undergraduates in MBBS, Dental, Nursing, and Paramedical courses, while also supporting postgraduate research projects at NIMS.

With a mission to expand scientific knowledge and cultivate skilled professionals, the Department of Microbiology at At NIMRA Institute of Medical Sciences, Teaching Hospital & Research Center (NIMS), continues to make significant contributions to healthcare and education.
